Don Wells and Jean Groen have been writing books about local desert plants since 1997. Their latest book, Cat’s Claw to Cow’s Tongue and Other Lesser Known Plants of the Sonoran Desert" is chock full of pictures, information and recipes for some of our lesser known desert plants. During the depression, Don Wells was put in charge of the family’s Victory Garden. He also helped his mother with the cooking and canning of all the produce. Jean Wells was raised on a Kansas farm during the depression. She learned to eat anything that was put before her and started cooking at the tender age of six!

Don and Jean each have a special role to play when they write books. Don provides beautiful color photographs of each plant, tells the reader where the plant can be found, and describes the medicinal use for the plant, seed, or fruit. Jean’s job is to research Native American recipes for each plant, and develop “modern” recipes based on today’s methods.

“We believe that we all should learn to live with the desert without harming its delicate balance and to understand its needs and nature to better serve its preservation. The plants of the desert served the Indian in so many ways, medicinally, physically, and spiritually. We feel that we can learn to use these plants as they were intended without harming the plants or the environment they grow in. The desert is a wondrous gift for all to enjoy, appreciate, and protect”, say Don and Jean.

SUPERSTITION COWBOYS by Jack San Felice

 

Arizona author and historian, Jack San Felice, has collected into one copiously illustrated volume the stories of many early cowboys and ranchers of our local harsh high desert environment. In Superstition Cowboys you'll read about the hardy women who raised their children and provided comfort to their men while living in rough-hewn cabins under primitive conditions.

You'll read about many of the early cowboys and vaqueros who came to southern Arizona with their longhorns and wild Mexican cattle. The rough and tough cowboys of the Superstition Mountains came to the Arizona Territory from all parts of America and all walks of life. Some were successful and fulfilled their dream, while others did not.

 Local folks will recognize and fondly recall many family names of the ranchers and cowboys Jack has included in Superstition Cowboys: Horrell, Bohme, Martin, Armer, Bacon, Miles, and Henderson, to name just a few. Each of these family stories is accompanied by fabulous photos and illustrations of the cattle brands used by the various ranches.

For over fifteen years, Jack San Felice has written and lectured about the history of the Superstition Mountains and surrounding areas. He is an adjunct professor at Scottsdale Community College and holds B.S. and M.S. degrees from American University in Washington, D.C. Jack lives in Mesa, Arizona with his wife Wynne and nearby adult children and grandchildren.

THOSE DAYS IN DECEMBER by Nancy Lucia Humphry

Those Days in December: A Frontier Family's Southwestern Journey chronicles the interwoven lives of two very dissimilar people, bound together by marriage, in the vast lands of the American Southwest. This historical novel traces the changing times as reflected in the lives of real people, Clem Humphry (1856-1943), and Maria Lucia Gonzales (1872-1966), in New Mexico, Colorado, and Arizona, as remembered by Lucia in her old age.

In 1891, as a young schoolteacher, Lucia married Clem, a widower with three young daughters, near Trinidad, Colorado. Through this marriage Lucia broke with family tradition by marrying outside her culture and religion.

During the 1880s, Clem had been Range Superintendent for the 2.5 million acre New Mexico branch of the Prairie Cattle Company. Married life with Clem - a true man of the old West: cattle rancher, businessman, prominent citizen, politician, and some said murderer - took them from place to place in a never ending search for the wealth and fame that had been his during the the late 1800s. Their journeys brought heartbreak and pain, and taught them both resilience, while Lucia's work as a midwife and curandera sustained her, as did her enduring faith.

Clem and Lucia Humphry spent their final years in Winkelman, Arizona. They are both buried in Mountain View Cemetary in the contiguous town of Hayden.

Kenneth Zeigler is a high school chemistry teacher who taught for many years in Globe-Miami area schools. He is currently teaching at University High School in Tolleson, Arizona. Ken holds a masters degree in chemistry and did his graduate work in quantum mechanics. He and his wife, Mary, have two grown children and two grandchildren.

MOM, WAS THERE COLOR WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG? by Susan Steadle-Phillips

You're invited to snoop into a young girl's diary, written back in 1967 when she was a 14 year old freshman in the high school of a fictional southwestern mining town. You're sure to agonize and empathise with this charming character as she describes the pain of her mother's untimely and unexpected death, the echoing lonliness of a now empty house, the shock and hurt of her father's hasty return to dating, the frustration and discomfort of becoming the inexperienced caretaker of her truncated family, the disappointment and embarassment of bailing her drunk father out of jail, and the wonder and confusion of her introduction to the world of boys.

Susan Steadle-Phillips was raised in the copper mining community of Globe-Miami in south central Arizona. She insists that any resemblance the reader might imagine they see to actual events, locales, organizations or persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental. She suggests that, if anyone sees themselves in her characters, they receive therapy to seek the source of their discomfort......
